The thought world of Korean Buddhism has attracted increasing attention in the West in recent years. Zen as clearly articulated by the Korean master Seung Sahn (b. 1927), who is widely recognised as one of the most important figures in contemporary Buddhism along with H.H. the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh and Maha Ghosananda, has attracted interest in many countries. The poems of Zen monks, called sonsi, are part of this still living and inspiring tradition.

This collection presents for the first time in English the poetry of fourteen important Korean Zen masters, beginning with Chingak (12th-13th centuries) and ending with Songchol (20th century). The anthology has been translated from the Sino-Korean originals, with an introduction, foreword, explanatory notes and biographical medallions by Ivana M. Gruber, who received the Jungmann Prize in 2002.
