Marie Noel, by her own name Marie Rouget (1883-1967), French poet and writer, came from a highly educated but not very religious family. She remained unmarried and hardly left her hometown of Auxerre. Yet her life's course was by no means easy The love of her youth ended in disappointment (replaced by waiting for a great love that never came) the death of her little brother one Christmas (hence her pen name Noel), a crisis of faith ... all underline her poetry as marked by the character of folk song. In 1962, she received the Grand Prize for Poetry from the French Academy.
