New York, 25th century.
Humanity has achieved peace and absolute freedom, but has lost control of everything, society is controlled by robots through drugs and mental manipulation, is degenerate, lacks the desire for love, knowledge, and responsibility. Humans have only a few things to worry about - inner mental development, sex, porn and drugs, they are a dumbed down herd controlled by their own creation, no one can read, no one wants to think. Not because people are under any oppression. They just don't want to. The two most important lessons for life are: "Don't mess with sex!" and "You don't know what to do, get it out of your head!"
The two central characters, Professor Bentley and his companion Mary Lou, are trying to break free from the control of the all-controlling computers. Through their fates, Tevis presents a bleak vision of a future society while warning of the potential misuse of science and technology, but at the same time this book does not lack faith in man and his reason and hope that humanity will resist the senseless desire for self-destruction.
