Za filosofie fotografie
In his essay Towards a Philosophy of Photography, Willem Flusser (1920-1991), one of the most important postmodern philosophers and theorists of new media, reveals how human freedom has no place in the realm of automatic, programmed and programming devices, in order to show that it is still possible to open up a space for freedom.
Vilém Flusser was born in 1920 in Prague. In 1938 he emigrated via the UK to Brazil, where he worked on the philosophy of science and communication theory during his university years. His first book was published in Portuguese. He returned to Europe with his wife Edita in 1972 and settled in the south of France. Since November 1989 he has visited Czechoslovakia several times. After his second public appearance in Prague in 1991, he died in a serious car accident. Willem Flusser, who after his return to Europe became involved in the theory and practice of new media, is one of the most prominent figures in postmodern philosophy. His importance was first recognized in Germany; books he wrote in German began to appear in Europe in the mid-1980s and are now translated into many languages.
