The author has seduced several characters into this black farce of a novel: a pregnant unmarried nurse, her married musician lover, his beautiful and jealous wife, a hunt for stray dogs, a scene in front of an abortion committee, a young American woman longing for a child and her husband, who is terrified of death, and a Czech gynaecologist, who treats supposedly infertile patients in a spa by injecting his own semen, thus establishing the fraternisation of humanity and asking the aforementioned Americans to adopt him in return for their service, thus enabling him to travel abroad, and finally a former political prisoner who becomes a murderer just before his legal emigration.
