The study Psychiatry and Philosophy (1963) is one of Erwin Straus's important texts. Its main theme is both the practical and theoretical problems of modern psychiatry, pointing out the limits imposed by its historical connection with medicine and the natural sciences. Straus, on the other hand, proposes to link psychiatry and medicine in a new way also with the humanities and philosophy. This would create an entirely new discipline, so-called medical anthropology, which would address the basic problems of medicine and psychiatry, i.e. the problems of physical and mental health, in direct connection with the basic questions of philosophy, among which Straus includes in particular the question of human nature and the position of man in the whole world.
