In addition to his large-scale novels depicting the life and mores of French society in the first half of the 19th century, Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) also wrote shorter literary works, and here his art of characterisation and his ability to tell a developed story in a small space stand out. The specific subject of these small prose pieces by Balzac is the world of artists. As a writer he was naturally close to it, but he showed a particular understanding of it in the case of painting and music.
