Grandhotel
The main character of the "novel above the clouds" is a thirty-year-old loner Fleischman. His life is not going well. He has never accomplished anything. He's never been anywhere. He's never had a girlfriend. But he understands clouds, high pressure, low pressure and wind direction. His life is given order by the weather chart and, in time, by Franz, an old Sudeten German who comes to Liberec to bury his classmates. Fleischman, who doesn't even know his own first name, works as a jack-of-all-trades at the Grandhotel on Jested. Watching the sky in the magical place between heaven and earth, he discovers that the only way out of the besieged city and his own life is through the clouds. However, his plan is interfered with by a waitress, Ilya, who appears one day at the hotel reception. But the decision to leave the city at any cost cannot be reversed. The book was the basis for the screenplay of David Ondříček's film Grandhotel (2006).
