In nine studies, W. G. Sebald explores the thematic complex of home and exile that is so characteristic of 19th- and 20th-century Austrian literature. Because Sebald himself lived abroad and navigated familiar terrain, his sensitive perceptions reveal a context whose relevance is illustrated not least by the constantly reemerging question of the identity of the once so powerful Austria and the changing assimilationist history of the Jews over time. In the essays in this volume, the loss of home for many Austrian writers plays a fundamental role.
