Chinese-style pavilions, built in the gardens of the rural aristocracy or in places of particularly charming natural scenery, are as intrinsic to the Korean cultural landscape as the hansi poems written by Korean literati in classical Chinese. Until the early 20th century, it was a good practice for almost every educated Korean to write Chinese poems. Composing verse was a great pastime for Korean literati. Although naturally many poems were written in solitude, so to speak, poetry gatherings held an irreplaceable place in the cultural and social life of the educated. Poetry in Chinese was, among other things, a means of advancement in a clerical career, because along with the study of Chinese Confucian texts and history, the study of classical Chinese poetry and essays was also an integral part of education in ancient Korea.
