Adiós, Španělsko
The last book by the German-writing Prague novelist Lenka Reinerová (1916-2008). The storyline connects Prague with Spain in the dramatic time of the Civil War at the end of the 1930s. The main story is interwoven with autobiographical reflections from the present, as we know well from other books by Lenka Reinerová. The theme that preoccupied the twenty-two-year-old author until her last moments and led her to write this text is closely linked to the question: "Why were so many young people in the interwar period, especially young people, willing to stand up to evil, to risk their lives in the fight for democracy and their idea of freedom?" The novel is accompanied by annotated excerpts from the wartime diaries of Theodor Balko (1900-1974), a doctor, inter-brigadist and later the author's husband, and a historical study Czechoslovak Inter-Brigadists in Spain 1936-1939. Translated from German by Olga Walló and Viera Glosiková.
